PAUL RENZ
With Anders Bostrom (flute), Jonathan Thomas
(bass) and Nathan Fryett (drums)
CD Release Tour for ReBop
Thursday, September 4, 2008, 7:00 pm
Krantz Concert Hall 151 Elliot’s Hill Lane,
Lexington, VA
When planning for his new release ReBop, Twin
Cities-based jazz guitarist Paul Renz was hearing
the flute as a key part of the combo.
Specifically, he was hearing the flute of his
early-1980s Berklee classmate Anders Bostrom
(whose credits include McCoy Tyner’s Latin Jazz
group and premier Broadway productions). Although
they had been out of contact for over two decades,
Bostrom enthusiastically agreed to fly in from the
East Coast to meet up with old friend, and highly-
lauded guitarist, Paul Renz to lay down some
tracks. The resulting mix of bebop, blues, funk,
Latin jazz and one poignant ballad flows as
seamlessly as a musical conversation amongst like-
minded pals. And it’s not just the fluid and
arresting guitar of Renz and the melodious flute
of Bostrom getting in on the warm vibe – Renz
generously showcases all of his bandmates for a
true ensemble experience.
ReBop is Paul Renz’s sixth CD release. His
previous offering, 2006’s Beyond Blues, had a
lengthy run on the national JazzWeek radio charts
and was honored in Minnesota Monthly’s “Best of
Minnesota” issue. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s
glowing review said, “… guitarist Paul Renz will
knock you out.” Renz grew up in the Washington,
D.C., area and went on to study with jazz greats
including Herb Pomeroy. The track “Farewell HP”
on ReBop is an elegiac tribute to Mr. Pomeroy, who
passed away in 2007. A graduate of Boston’s
Berklee College of Music (where he met Bostrom)
and the New England Conservatory, Renz is an
educator in his own right at Minneapolis’ West
Bank School of Music (Jazz Studies Department
Head) and MacPhail Center for Music. He also
conducts clinics throughout the U.S. An
accomplished composer, Renz wrote six of the seven
tracks on ReBop, adding in an inventive reworking
of Bud Powell’s “Un Poco Loco.”
Anders Bostrom is originally from Nykvara, Sweden,
and currently resides in New Jersey. After
studying at the Royal Academy of Music in
Stockholm, he attended Berklee. Bostrom performs
regularly in the orchestras of major Broadway
productions (Tarzan, Bombay Dreams). This highly
in-demand flutist has performed or recorded with
many luminaries including McCoy Tyner, Walt
Weiskopf, Giovanni Hidalgo, Chick Corea, Paula
Cole and Gary Burton.
“Renz is the Van Gogh of jazz guitar.”
-Lois Berg
“Hearing Paul Renz's new CD "ReBop" was like
meeting an old friend, who is unstoppable!”
-Peter Kuller, Radio Adelaide, Australia
“Renz’s playing is a tantalizing mix of creativity
and craftsmanship.”
-David Dupont, Cadence Magazine
"Paul Renz’s music is a kick! It’s a fresh,
breathing, surprising, tune-filled, character-to-
spare personal amalgam of so much that’s so fine
about modern mainstream jazz.” -Tom Surowicz, City
Pages, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Midwest Jazz
"Paul Renz distinguishes himself on "ReBop" not
only as a musician, but as a composer and arranger
of electric jazz with a modern twist." -Edward
Blanco, ejazznews.com, April 2008
