PAUL RENZ
With Anders Bostrom (flute), Jonathan Thomas
(bass) and Nathan Fryett (drums)
CD Release Tour for ReBop
Thursday, September 4, 2008, 7:00 pm
Krantz Concert Hall 151 Elliot's Hill Lane,
Lexington, VA
When planning for his new release ReBop, Twin
Cities-based jazz guitarist Paul Renz was hearing
the flute as a key part of the combo.
Specifically, he was hearing the flute of his
early-1980s Berklee classmate Anders Bostrom
(whose credits include McCoy Tyner's Latin Jazz
group and premier Broadway productions). Although
they had been out of contact for over two decades,
Bostrom enthusiastically agreed to fly in from the
East Coast to meet up with old friend, and highly-
lauded guitarist, Paul Renz to lay down some
tracks. The resulting mix of bebop, blues, funk,
Latin jazz and one poignant ballad flows as
seamlessly as a musical conversation amongst like-
minded pals. And it's not just the fluid and
arresting guitar of Renz and the melodious flute
of Bostrom getting in on the warm vibe -- Renz
generously showcases all of his bandmates for a
true ensemble experience.
ReBop is Paul Renz's sixth CD release. His
previous offering, 2006's Beyond Blues, had a
lengthy run on the national JazzWeek radio charts
and was honored in Minnesota Monthly's "Best of
Minnesota" issue. The Philadelphia Inquirer's
glowing review said, "... guitarist Paul Renz will
knock you out." Renz grew up in the Washington,
D.C., area and went on to study with jazz greats
including Herb Pomeroy. The track "Farewell HP"
on ReBop is an elegiac tribute to Mr. Pomeroy, who
passed away in 2007. A graduate of Boston's
Berklee College of Music (where he met Bostrom)
and the New England Conservatory, Renz is an
educator in his own right at Minneapolis' West
Bank School of Music (Jazz Studies Department
Head) and MacPhail Center for Music. He also
conducts clinics throughout the U.S. An
accomplished composer, Renz wrote six of the seven
tracks on ReBop, adding in an inventive reworking
of Bud Powell's "Un Poco Loco."
Anders Bostrom is originally from Nykvara, Sweden,
and currently resides in New Jersey. After
studying at the Royal Academy of Music in
Stockholm, he attended Berklee. Bostrom performs
regularly in the orchestras of major Broadway
productions (Tarzan, Bombay Dreams). This highly
in-demand flutist has performed or recorded with
many luminaries including McCoy Tyner, Walt
Weiskopf, Giovanni Hidalgo, Chick Corea, Paula
Cole and Gary Burton.
"Renz is the Van Gogh of jazz guitar."
-Lois Berg
"Hearing Paul Renz's new CD "ReBop" was like
meeting an old friend, who is unstoppable!"
-Peter Kuller, Radio Adelaide, Australia
"Renz's playing is a tantalizing mix of creativity
and craftsmanship."
-David Dupont, Cadence Magazine
"Paul Renz's music is a kick! It's a fresh,
breathing, surprising, tune-filled, character-to-
spare personal amalgam of so much that's so fine
about modern mainstream jazz." -Tom Surowicz, City
Pages, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Midwest Jazz
"Paul Renz distinguishes himself on "ReBop" not
only as a musician, but as a composer and arranger
of electric jazz with a modern twist." -Edward
Blanco, ejazznews.com, April 2008

House Concert Saturday April 5 7:30 p.m. in our music room!!!!

Pianist Jacqueline Schwab is appearing in a house
concert here in the Krantz music room at 151
Elliot's Hill Lane, Lexington, VA April 5 2008 at
7:30 p.m.

If you have experienced any of the PBS film series
The Civil War, Baseball, Mark Twain, or The War,
you have heard the pianist, Jacqueline Schwab. In
the words of documentary filmmaker Ken
Burns, "Jacqueline Schwab brings more feeling and
intensity to music than anyone I know."
Jacqueline will be appearing in Lexington on
Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. at a house concert
in the home of David and Linda Krantz in a
performance, The Music of Americana. She will
also perform at a house concert in Charlottesville
on Sunday, April 6.

Schwab can be heard on the soundtracks for a dozen
of Ken Burns' PBS documentaries, including his
Grammy award-winning Civil War, his Emmy award-
winning Baseball, Mark Twain, and his recently
premiered The War. Schwab's improvisational
playing, in turns elegiac and sprightly, draws on
classical, traditional folk, and contemporary
roots. The New England Folk Almanac wrote, She
plays with "the jazz/classical improvisational
spirit of Keith Jarrett and the touch of George
Winston ...."

She has performed music from Burns' Lewis and
Clark series for President Clinton at the White
House and has also performed presidential music at
the Smithsonian. She records and performs with
many traditional musicians, including a long-
standing partnership with the English dance music
quartet Bare Necessities, as well as with Scottish
fiddlers Alasdair Fraser and Laura Risk, as part
of the Scottish duo New Rigged Ship, and with
singer Jean Redpath (including an appearance on A
Prairie Home Companion). Jacqueline has three
solo recordings: Mad Robin, Down Came an Angel,
and Mark Twain's America, as well as a recording
of Civil War-era music to be "played" on modern
digital pianos. For more information on
Jacqueline's work, see:
http://www.jacquelineschwab.com.

Schwab's solo concerts of vintage American and
traditional Celtic and English music create an
intimate, "parlor" atmosphere. For this concert,
she will perform her signature arrangements of
American music of Mark Twain's era: well-known
Stephen Foster and Civil War parlor songs, Scots
and Irish tunes brought over from the Old Country,
Victorian ballroom dance tunes, hymns and
spirituals, ragtime and more. Jacqueline speaks
informally (but knowledgeably) to the audience
about each of the pieces, highlighting the
history, origins, folklore, and popular culture,
making each one memorable.

Tickets for the Krantz house concert may be
reserved by e-mailing lkrantz@cfw.com. Eighty
tickets will be available. When all tickets are
spoken for, there will be a waiting list only. A
donation basket will be placed in the music room;
the suggested ticket value is $15/person. There
will be one short intermission; soft drinks will
be served. For questions or reservations please
write to lkrantz@cfw.com. Informal, comfortable
clothing is appropriate in the Krantz music room.

Fall 2006 Music Party October 6

Dave doesn't go around having birthdays for just
any old reason (especially at his age) but as a
pretext for a music party, it seemed like it was
worth a shot. So Friday, October 6 is the "major
musical eve" before the minor momento moment of
the "official" October 7 birthdate. If you're
even less into birthdays than Dave is, the excuse
that there's a full moon on the 7th will have to
suffice. It's the only gift he needs (especially
since nothing more will fit inside the house,
anyway). So plan not to bring any such stuff
accordingly - just the usual shareable food and
drinks. SO HERE'S THE SCHEDULE!!!! As usual, e-
mail us with a request for a starting time and a
10, 20, or 30 minute slot and tell us which
instruments you'll have. We'll sign you up, first
come, first served. lkrantz@cfw.com Thanks!
Everyone's welcome to come and listen, all ages,
even if you don't want to perform.
